Ports & Terminals
Market overview

Port activities are growing rapidly in Europe and worldwide. Economically they are a key component of the European single market and the Trans-European Transport Network (over 90% of Europe’s trade with the rest of the world is shipped through its sea ports). There are over 1000 seaports in Europe today handling a total of 3.5 billion tonnes of cargo per year. 350 million passengers pass through European ports annually, which equal almost 70% of the European population.

The Ports industry itself is very important to the European economy; approximately 350.000 people in Europe work in port and directly related services (excluding industry), while the total European maritime cluster provides employment to about 2.5 million people. Due to increasing competition from China and the promotion of short sea shipping as a less polluting than road transport, ports are facing large increases in maritime transport.

Needs

car-ferry-lfPort traffic is increasing in Europe due to the promotion of short sea shipping in response to the environmental cost and over congestion of land based transport. There is also increasing competition from rapidly growing economies such as China. Therefore ports are under pressure to accommodate this increased traffic and to increase capacity, which means that they need to offer adequate infrastructure that can conflict with environmental considerations. A trend towards increased implementation of Quality Control systems (ISO) and regulations within the shipping and ports industry in Europe has been seen.

The ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facilities Security), enforced since July 1°th, 2004, establishes new rules for Ports Security and provides a protocol for adopting extraordinary Security and of Safety measures in order to reduce the risks for maritime activities by using the PSA (Port Security Assessment) and the PSP (Port Security Plan).
