Ferry and Ro-Ro market
Market overview
The European ferry industry is one of the fastest growing in the world. Forecasters predict an increase in passenger volume year to year of between two and three percent and three to four percent in freight volume. During the last year at least 20 ferry ships were delivered, signs that the growth in this maritime market segment is clear.
The definition of Ferry means a vessel using technology for the transportation of cars and commercial vehicles, with passengers accommodation sailing on a regular line.
The term Ro-Ro is a very wide one: it simply includes all vessels where there is an option of driving the cargo, whether it be trailers or cars from the shore into the ship or vice versa.
To our knowledge there s no organization or company that as attempted to compile the number of passengers and vehicle transported by Ferry and Ro-Ro round the world. But for year 2007 the editor ShipPax from Sweden, arrived at a total figure of close to 1,6 Billion passengers, 214 Million cars, 735.000 buses, and 31 Million trailers carried on 6,6 Million trips.

With the European Union being aware of environmental aspect and traffic congestions ashore, there is a prevailing political will to send more volumes of transportation by sea. By providing new traffic solutions and transport corridors, the Ferry Ro-Ro industry could benefit. We are facing that the European initiative “Highways of the sea” s a competitive solution for the former cargo roads routes.
Needs
Today the Ferry operators are adding revenue through improved onboard facilities features that reflect lifestyle ashore, by providing new technology onboard for example, with business centers for business people who will be able to work during the sea crossing.
There are some threats that the new technologies can drive up to solve for the Ferry market. The Ferries are sailing with lots of empty capacity. The ferry companies are facing an intensified competition from the low budget airlines. Perhaps there is a chance to introduce new software solution for the Booking and Yield Management.
